Alamo Group Inc. Electrical Engineer in Huntsville, Alabama

Position Summary:

Under minimal supervision, develops and designs new products for sales/marketing lines, modifies or improves exiting product lines, and creates accurate documentation for each design/detail drawing on computer system, in accordance with specifications and industry standards. Determines components to be used on actual product(s).

Essential Functions of the Job:

Designs products including electrical systems and harness assemblies for assigned projects on computer system using SolidWorks or Visio software. Utilizes knowledge of products, design standards and manufacturing capabilities.

Work as a part of a closely integrated team, co-designing components, leading a collaborative design effort, or designing systems to interface with others concurrent work.

Creates detailed component schematic, harness drawing and wires lists to assist production with building of products. Determines components to be used on actual products maintaining efficiency and cost effectiveness. Works closely with purchasing to source materials and/or vendors.

Structures an accurate Bill of Materials (BOM) for each electrical system or harness drawing completed.

Provides customer service and/or technical service regarding questions of products or designs.

Hands on Ability to lead or assist with the construction and installations of wire harnesses and electrical systems for prototype efforts.

Provides training to co-workers and new team members in course and scope of job, computer system, structuring BOM, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

Designs should reflect knowledge of manufacturing methods and experience making electrical systems for applications on trucks or related vehicles.

Proficient in 2-D drawings, schematics, harness construction, wire lists and component selection.

Proficient in use of a 3D CAD system to define documentation of Electrical Systems, review existing designs and conceptualize new designs.

Knowledge of electrical and embedded systems. Knowledge of design techniques for properly laying harnesses in mechanical assemblies allowing for safety and reliability.

Excellent computer skills. Proficient on Visio or SolidWorks 2D software program.

Ability to decipher PLC Programs for the purpose of troubleshooting and assisting in the development of control programs is strongly desired. Experience with Codesys Development system is a plus.

Experiencing with integrating CAN networks and CAN based devices into wire harnesses and electrical systems. Familiar with SAE J1939.

Hands on Ability to use tools related to the industry (multi-meter, test light, oscilloscope, power supplies, embedded programming interfaces, crimps tools, etc.) in the troubleshooting of vehicle electrical and control systems in prototyping, production and service

Familiar with common connector brands, i.e. Deutsch, Weather Pak, Tyco etc.

Able to read and technically interpret engineering drawings. Able to read and understand technical manuals.

Knowledge of engineering design standards and manufacturing capabilities.

Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. Able to write or speak technical instructions.

Knowledge of creating Bill of Materials, Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and Materials Requirements Planning (MRP) systems.

Knowledge of circuit analysis, circuit protection, component selection and conductor sizing.

Education and Experience:

BSEE or BSET or related Bachelors of Science in a closely related field.

Minimum 6 years-previous electrical engineering experience, preferably in a heavy vehicle related environment.
