Under general supervision, the Material Handler moves material and parts in and around the manufacturing facility, prepares parts orders for shipment, and verifies and keeps records of outgoing shipments. Compares identifying information and counts, weighs, or measures items of outgoing shipments to verify information against bill of lading, sales orders, work orders, or other records. Responsible for the accuracy of shipping documents, inventory, and making required transactions into various inventory control programs.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  1. Prioritize the picking, packing, and shipping of parts according to the sales/work order.

  2. Report defective materials or questionable conditions to the Parts & Service Manager, in conjunction with the Operations Manager.

  3. Maintain the equipment and work area in a clean and orderly condition, and follow prescribed safety regulations.

  4. Assist the shipping and receiving department in preparing whole good products for shipment, and conform with shipping specifications and requirements.

  5. Assist shipping/receiving personnel as needed.

  6. Read production schedules, customer orders, and work orders, shipping orders or requisitions to identify items to be moved, gathered or distributed.

  7. Organize the parts warehouse and work area for efficiency and safety at all times.

  8. Collaborates with various internal departments for order and inventory accuracy.

  9. Safe use of material handling equipment, to include fork lifts, and overhead cranes, etc.

  10. Ensure compliance with ISO Standards.

  11. May be assigned additional responsibilities as necessary to support continuous improvement, and the manufacturing operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Must be able to read and interpret work orders, part numbers and shipping documents.

  • Requires ability to perform basic math and inventory management concepts.

  • Requires ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.

  • Strong computer skills; ability to enter data, look up information and maneuver between several computer programs simultaneously.

  • Must be capable of estimating weight, and use that information to calculate the cost of shipping.

  • Knowledge and basic understanding of inventory management software, ie. JD Edwards.

  • Requires familiarity with proper packaging methods and various forms used and required by the major freight carriers. Must have ability to fill out bills of lading.

  • Must be familiar with the most common material handling equipment and be able to become a licensed forklift truck operator.

  • Requires use of appropriate personal protective equipment including but not limited to: safety glasses, hearing protection and safety shoes.

  • Able to work overtime and/or including weekends as production schedule dictates.

  • Has a positive attitude, and a friendly demeanor.

  • Ability to work well with a team, and independently as needed.

Education and Experience:

  • Requires a minimum of 2 years of previous shipping, receiving, warehouse or material handling experience; preferably in a metal manufacturing production environment.

Work performed in a non-climate controlled metal manufacturing production environment, with frequent standing, twisting, bending, stooping, and climbing in and around metal fabricated parts. Frequent lifting, pushing or pulling of 40 pounds alone and 100> pounds with assistance. Requires sufficient manual dexterity and visual acuity to identify required parts and operate production equipment (i.e. forklift, hand truck, etc.)
