Old Dominion Brush Company (ODB) is accepting applications to fill the position of Material Handler for Welding and Assembly in the department of Assembly in Richmond, Virginia.

Position Summary:

Under direct supervision, performs duties to receive, retrieve, transfer and store parts and materials for manufacturing operations. Under direct supervision loads, unloads, and moves materials within or near plant, yard or work site. Reads work order or follows verbal instructions to ascertain materials or containers to be moved. Operates forklifts and other material handling equipment.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Fills requisitions, work orders, requests for materials or other stock items and moves and/or distributes materials to fabrication and assembly areas.

  • Assembles orders from stock and places orders on pallets or shelves, or moves orders to packing stations, shipping department or trailers.

  • Reads production schedules, customer orders, and work orders, shipping orders or requisitions to identify items to be moved, gathered or distributed.

  • Inspects product load for accuracy and safely moves it around the facility to ensure timely and complete delivery.

  • Stacks or assembles materials into bundles and bands together in preparation for movement.

  • Loads and unloads materials to or from pallets, trays, racks and shelves manually, by hoist, crane or forklift.

  • Moves materials and items from receiving or production areas to storage or other designated areas by hand, hand truck or forklift.

  • Sorts and places materials or items on racks, shelves or in bins according to predetermined locations.

  • Uses computer and hand-held scanner to assess info, record transactions and verified data.

  • Records amounts of materials or items received or distributed by processing issues, transfers, receipts or sales orders. Key transactions in to RF hand-held or desktop computer.

  • Ships whole goods/parts to destination and/or moves within assembly/fabrication areas.

  • Operates forklifts, cherry pickers, sit down and stand up lifts.

  • Accurately records work order information and inventory transactions.

  • Uses computer to assess information or verify data.

  • Maintains a neat, clean and organized work area.

  • Follows all company and departmental safety rules including proper use of personal protective equipment.

  • Maintains focus on work areas for flags indicating materials are out or running low.

  • May be assigned additional responsibilities as necessary to support the business operations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

  • Ability to operate forklift and parts picker lift safely.

  • General computer skills -- data entry experience.

  • Prior experience with RF scanners helpful.

  • Prior JD Edwards experience helpful.

  • Basic math skills.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Ability to read and write in English.

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum one-year previous shipping/receiving and material handling experience in manufacturing or industrial environment.

  • Experience operating a forklift.

Working Conditions:

The following activities are required up to 100% of a typical day:

  • Stand and walk on a concrete surface

  • Use hands or fingers to handle or feel

  • Reach with hands and arms

  • Talk and hear

  • Lift, pull or push up to 50 pounds without assistance

The following activities are required up to 50% of a typical day:

  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl

  • Lifting 51 to 100 pounds with assistance.

The position has the following vision requirements:

  • Ability to distinguish colors and shades of color

This employee will work in a loud, non-climate controlled manufacturing environment
